Marine Education for Pre-Schools / Kindergartens
| Dear Josie/ Sally, just wanted to let you know how
delighted and thrilled we all were with Seaweed Sally's
incursion at Civic Kindergarten this morning - the session
was perfectly pitched to our children and they were so
engaged and interested in all he had to show and tell. Seaweed Sally’s experience with young children was obvious as he calmly managed the group of 22 4 and 5 year olds! Thank you so much for bringing the fascinating world of marine animals to us - and a big thank you to Seaweed Sally! We now look forward to continuing our interest in the sea... |

Seaweed Sally is a mobile pre school program where the marine life is brought to you. A great way to learn about the marine environment and save on transport costs. The program is unique, fun and a “hands on” experience into the mysterious world of marine life - the animals, their environment and how to preserve and protect them. The pre school program is tailored specifically to suit 3 - 5 year old children. However it is ideal for the 4 year old kinder program.
How big is a whale bone? Where is the seastars mouth? Who makes the seashells and how? All these questions and more will be answered with a visit from Seaweed Sally. We cover everything from the open ocean, to the rock pools at the shore.
Some amazing specimens will be on display for the children to handle such as whale bones, shark eggs, octopus, cuttlefish, seahorse and much much more!!! An intimate and interactive teaching environment will allow the children to handle LIVE animals such as sea stars, elephant snails, sea squirts, and sea urchins. Have you ever touched an elephant snail? He doesn’t feel like an elephant!
How the program runs in more detail - each 2 hour session will involve:
The preserved specimens
A large collection of preserved specimens will be displayed upon your kinder tables. The first half hour will involve some mat time, where the children will listen, learn and discuss some amazing facts about the specimens on show. The children are then given free time to handle all of the things on display around the tables at their own pace. As there are more specimens on display than is possible to cover in half an hour, at this time the children have an opportunity to ask any questions they wish on a one to one basis.
The Touch Tank
The free standing large touch tank accommodates up to 15 children at a time. Therefore the group will be divided in half and swap between two activities each of 20 minutes duration. One group will be with Seaweed Sally/Sammy at the touch tank. Each child will have the opportunity to touch or hold at least one of each species of the live rock pool animals, whilst discussing the physiology, and environmental behaviours (eg. Camouflage) of the animals, in language that young children understand. The other group will have free time for the teacher to use at their discretion. Eg. Snack or outside time.
Music
To finish the session Seaweed Sally/Sammy will introduce the signature song from her new CD (available from this website) to the children. The children will learn the words and actions to sing along with Sally’s guitar singing about the animals that were on show for the day.
