Seaweed Sally is a mobile preschool program that brings the wonders of marine life directly to you! It's a fantastic way to explore the marine environment while saving on transport costs. This unique, fun, and hands-on experience introduces children to the mysterious world of marine life—covering the animals, their habitats, and ways to preserve and protect them. Tailored specifically for children aged 3 to 5, this program is especially perfect for 4-year-old kindergarten students.
How big is a whale’s bone? Where is a sea star’s mouth? Who makes seashells, and how? All these questions and more will be answered with a visit from Seaweed Sally! From the vast open ocean to the fascinating rock pools along the shore, we explore it all.
Some incredible specimens will be on display for the children to handle, including whale bones, shark eggs, octopuses, cuttlefish, seahorses, and much more! In a hands-on, interactive teaching environment, the children will also have the opportunity to touch LIVE animals such as sea stars, elephant snails, sea squirts, and sea urchins. Have you ever touched an elephant snail? It doesn’t feel like an elephant at all!
How the program runs
The preserved specimens
A fascinating collection of preserved specimens will be displayed right on your kinder tables. The first half hour will be spent on mat time, where the children will listen, learn, and discuss incredible facts about the specimens on show. Afterward, they’ll have free time to explore and handle everything on display at their own pace. With more specimens than can be covered in just half an hour, this is also the perfect time for children to ask any questions they have, one-on-one!
The Touch Tank
The freestanding touch tank accommodates up to 15 children at a time. To make the most of the experience, the group will be divided in half, with each group rotating between two activities, each lasting 20 minutes. One group will join Seaweed Sally/Sammy at the touch tank, where every child will have the chance to touch or hold at least one of each species of live rock pool animals. As they do, they’ll learn about the animals’ physiology and environmental behaviors (like camouflage) in a way that’s easy for young children to understand. Meanwhile, the other group will have free time, which the teacher can use for activities like snack time or outdoor play.
Music
Upon request we can finish off the session teaching the children our Seaweed Sally song with actions.
