Australian Curriculum & Victorian Certificate of Education Scope and Sequence
Southern Ocean Education can provide your students with a number of different programs tailored to meet your needs. Remember we can tailor to any topic you wish with our qualified and engaging marine scientists.
Squid Dissection
If your students are looking for a more exciting dissection in their next biology class or are studying marine life, why not try a squid dissection with us? Ideal for Year 7–10 students, we bring the marine science right to your classroom! A marine scientist will guide the session, providing everything—squid, worksheets, and expert instruction. Students will work in pairs to fully dissect the squid, label its anatomy, and, of course, explore the ink sac. They’ll even use the squid's internal pen to write with! This is definitely a practical session your students won’t forget.

Rockpool Program
The live rockpool animal touch tank gives students the chance to see and feel firsthand how animals survive in the complex rockpool ecosystem. All the animals are native to the local Victorian intertidal zone. Among the creatures visiting your classroom will be sea stars, sea urchins, sea cucumbers, elephant snails, hermit crabs, cunjevoi, and sea sponges, just to name a few. During the session, we'll explore each animal’s unique adaptations, use taxonomy to classify them, and by the end, students will be able to draw food chains based on what they’ve learned.

How the program runs
Discussion
A 45 minute to one hour discussion session which involves all the students attending for the day. A hall may be needed for larger groups. During this session all topics will be discussed and the large display of preserved specimens on show for the students to see will be explained in more detail.
Classes
For the more intimate handling of both the preserved specimens and the live touch tank animals each class will need their own 30 session. The classes can then rotate throughout the day visiting the one room. (The display is too large to move between rooms.) During each individual session the class will be divided in half to rotate though two activities.
1) The handling and discovering of the preserved animals.
2) The handling of the live animals in a touch tank.
With time at the end of this session for any further questions.
